My Philosophy on Counseling and Psychotherapy
I’m sometimes told by clients I work with that I’m not a typical psychotherapist. I believe a single discipline lacks the ability to solve many of today’s complex emotional, behavioral and physical health challenges. I want to give my clients tools they can use moving forward which they continue to utilize for years to come. I also expect my clients to take an active role in their care. I’ll expect you to work between visits on your goals; if this sounds like you, I may be a good match for you.
I have had the privilege of working with many talented physicians. I have worked with and been educated by many of the pioneers in biofeedback, neuroscience, and psychophysiology. I am proud to have been a part of treatment teams at several C.A.R.F-accredited multidisciplinary pain management centers of excellence, comprehensive sleep disorders centers, teaching parenting courses for the court system and as the behavioral director of the Ryan Wheeler Headache Treatment Center in Miami.
In therapy, I draw from an eclectic pool of therapies based on my studies, training, and experience. An individual’s quality of life is often enhanced significantly by a process that includes:
- Careful evaluation of inter-related historical, lifestyle and emotional factors
- Education about the illness or syndrome
- Mastery of a repertoire of treatment techniques that have been scientifically-proven in controlled studies to be safe and effective
Specializations of My Counseling Practice
My Professional Development
As an undergraduate student, during summers I worked as a house parent in the Florida Keys at a residential facility for children and adolescents. After graduation, I took a position at a residential facility in the Redlands of South Florida called Grant Center Hospital.
Grant Center was unique by today’s standards; a teaching hospital, 6-month to 2-year residential program for children and adolescents. We had an accredited K-12 school on site, a number of talented psychiatrists, psychologists, family therapists and behavioral childcare workers. Multiple available therapies including: individual and group psychotherapy, biofeedback, horticulture therapy, dance and music therapy, activity therapy, drama therapy, play therapy, art therapy, a theater, a ropes course, occupational therapy and more all on 20 acres in the country. This afforded me the opportunity to train and learn from some South Florida’s most talented professionals in a cross-training multidisciplinary environment.
In addition to working with children and adolescents, I have also worked and studied in the field of Behavioral Medicine. Behavioral Medicine utilizes cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy, applied psychophysiology such as biofeedback and neurofeedback, and other evidence-based approaches to treating pain, adjustment, stress and anxiety-related disorders.
Much of my private-practice work has taken place in medical environments; designing and implementing complementary medicine procedures within a biopsychosocial model of medicine. This model of medicine is different from a traditional disease model in that it looks at a person’s experience of illness, pain, and disease from a perspective that includes the individual’s emotional, behavioral, learning, cultural and personality factors.
Currently, I enjoy working with all ages as well as couples and families; working with mood disorders and anxiety, panic disorder, trauma, PTSD, chronic pain, headache, couples counseling, ADHD, as well as optimal performance in sports, academics, and life.
